“Bisht Better Have My Money”

The piece explores notions of tradition, masculinity and change by utilizing a traditional article of male clothing- the bisht.
Within the regions patriarchal societies, the bisht – most often worn by leaders and decision makers- tends to symbolize male authority figures. Subsequently, it comes to also represent the caretaker & provider for both family and society.

The question posed here is:
what happens once the provider is no longer able to provide?

At a time of diminishing natural resources coupled with a decline in oil prices, it becomes pertinent to confront how we can adapt to a dramatic change to our current way of life; brought on by a drastic drop in national income.
We as a society will need to address challenges revolving around what role our leaders will play in the near future and how those roles may differ from our current perceptions.

Here, we have the traditionally dark bisht slowly draining of color through the effects of time and gravity; it seems to be returning to its original state. The dye runs down the fabric and collects at the hem, it swells and then percolates as drops of crude oil pooling on the sand beneath and ultimately soaking back into the earth from where it was first extracted.

تعكس هذه القطعه الفنيه مفاهيم ذكوريه و تقليديه من منظور الزمن و التغيير …البشت المعروض يعتبر قطعة من ملابس الرجل العربي عامةً و الخليجي بالأخص، يرتديها صاحب السلطة، متخد القرار و المعيل بصفه تقليديه..وهو غالبا ما يرمز الي الرجولة والقوة سواء في محيط الاسرة او الدولة.
و السؤال الذي يطرح من خلال هذا العمل هو…ماذا لو تضاءلت او انكمشت قوة صاحب السلطة لاي سبب كان…وماذا اذا انحسرت قدرة المعيل على الاعاله و فقد المجتمع الريعي راعيه…

التطورات الحالية والمستقبليه والمتمثلة في تناقص الموارد الطبيعية وانخفاض اسعار السلع الاساسية تدعونا الي التساؤل…كيف لنا كدولة تعودت الرخاء وسهولة الحياة ..التكيف مع هذه التطورات في ظل انخفاض حاد في الدخل القومي و مستوى المعيشه .
ماذا سيطال حياتنا اليومية انذاك… وكيف سيتم معالجة هذه التحديات وماهو دور قادة اليوم …غدا؟

فكأن تطور الحياة وتغيرها يوما بعد يوم وقوة الجاذبية ..اثرا علي لون و خاصية هذه القطعة… فخف لونها وبدت خيوطها الاصليه .

فاللون االاصلي …وكأنه يتقاطر من البشت مع مرور الزمن ، منجذبا الي الارض بفعل الجاذبيه.. حتى تشربت الاطراف السفلى منه باللون الاسود فخرج و تسرب من القماش كقطرات النفط الاسود الثقيل المنساله بفعل وزنها على رمال الصحراء اسفلها… لتتسرب من ثم الي جوفها ..حيث موطنها الطبيعي قبل ان نستخرجها.
